چکیده

The purpose of this study was to identify and describe similarities and differences in the tone quality of two professional quality C trumpets, and to provide a source of detailed information concerning trumpet tone quality. Individual tones and two-note transitions were performed on Bach and Monette C trumpets by a professional trumpet player and digitally recorded. Digital information from selected tones was transferred to computer files and analyzed using a spectral analysis program at the Sound Synthesis Studio of The Ohio State University. Four types of graphical representations resulted from analysis: perspective plots of Amplitude x Frequency x Time, single sample spectral profile plots, phase vocoder graphs of individual harmonics, and amplitude envelope plots of transitions. Comparisons of these various representations were used to identify similarities and differences of the steady-state, attack, decay, and transition portions of the digitized Bach and Monette trumpet tones. Subjective comments 1 2 on tbe tone quality of the two brands of trumpets investigated were solicited from principal trumpet players in major American orchestras. Their impressions were presented as anecdotal information and related to the physical comparisons of tones. Comparisons of spectral analyses revealed differences in the spectral composition of tones from the Bach and Monette trumpets. Differences tended to be consistent, and pertain primarily to the relative strengths and distributions of spectral energy. A formant region from 1000-1400 Hz was noted. The Monette trumpet generally produced more harmonics, was richer in high frequency energy, and produced a more consistent spectrum than the Bach trumpet. The amplitude of spectral components of Monette trumpet tones tended to be greater than for the same tones on the Bach trumpet. The instruments differed in distribution of spectral energy at the identified formant region. The Bach trumpet generally produced several strong and relatively equal harmonics in this region, while the Monette instrument produced a single harmonic considerably stronger than others. Subjective impressions of the professiC?nal players seemed to be supported by objective analyses.

Three-dimensional simulations of sound propagation in a trumpet with accurate mouthpiece shank geometry

The length and bore geometry of musical instruments directly influences the quality of sound that can be produced. In brass instruments, nonlinear effects from finite-amplitude wave propagation can lead to wave distortion giving sounds a brassy timbre [3, 5, 14, 20, 26]. In this paper, we propose a threedimensional model to describe nonlinear wave propagation in a trumpet and investigate the im...

Is nonlinear propagation responsible for the brassiness of elephant trumpet calls?

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) produce a broad diversity of sounds ranging from infrasonic rumbles to much higher frequency trumpets. Trumpet calls are very loud voiced signals given by highly aroused elephants, and appear to be produced by a forceful expulsion of air through the trunk. Some trumpet calls have a very distinctive quality that is unique in the animal kingdom, but resemble...

The visual/kinesthetic effects of melodic contour in musical notation as it affects vocal timbre in singers of classical and music theater repertoire.

The purpose of this investigation was to obtain information from professional singers active in performing of both classical and music theater repertoire with regard to the visual/kinesthetic effect of melodic contour in musical notation as it affects vocal timbre. The evaluation of data gathered during the study indicates that there is reason to investigate the resulting postural shifts of the...

On the“Virtual” Reconstruction of Sound Quality of Trumpets

In this paper the realisation of “virtual” wind instruments is analysed, in which the bores are treated as linear, invariant systems, characterised by their impulse responses. The “dry” excitation signal has been obtained from the output of the system, sampled through a microphone placed at the flaring bell of a trumpet, by convolution with a proper inverse filter, obtained from the impulse res...

It's not what you play, it's how you play it: Timbre affects perception of emotion in music

Salient sensory experiences often have a strong emotional tone, but the neuropsychological relations between perceptual characteristics of sensory objects and the affective information they convey remain poorly defined. Here we addressed the relationship between sound identity and emotional information using music. In two experiments, we investigated whether perception of emotions is influenced...
